AISD Magnet School in Works
January 24, 2006
Hardin-Simmons University and the Abilene Independent School District are expected to announce details of a partnership that will place a health science magnet school on the HSU campus. High school students would attend the magnet school, which would be part of HSU's Holland School of Sciences and Mathematics, an HSU official said. The magnet school would be adjacent to Hendrick Health System. Donors are making the new building possible.
Magnet schools focus on a particular subject or career. Students can learn a skill and earn certification or go on to college and earn a degree in that field. Students who attend a magnet school must still take regular classes and earn enough credits to graduate. Students who complete the three-year program can earn such certifications as nurse's aide, emergency medical technician or pharmacy aide. Some recent high school graduates are enrolled in pre-medical and pre-pharmacy programs at universities.
