The West Central Texas Workforce Development Board has awarded Workforce Investment Fund grants to two companies to improve their local workforce. Grants were awarded to:

  • Transcend - $20,219 to help train 21 new employees
  • Tel-IS - $25,615 to help train four new employees

Funds awarded to Transcend will provide an opportunity for individuals with basic medical transcription training, without experience, to become employed in a high demand medical occupation in this region. Tel-IS will use WIF funding to provide a certification training program essential for its employees in the communications technology industry. The WIF was created by the Workforce Board to provide funds for customized training, upgrading skills of current employees, developing new training programs, creating new high-skill or high-wage jobs, or retraining employees for new or emerging occupations. Grants of up to $50,000 are awarded quarterly through a competitive application process. The deadline for the next grant cycle is June 30. Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough, chair of the 11-member review panel, said, ''Tel-IS and Transcend are to be commended for their efforts to ensure a skilled workforce in the area.''
