The Abilene Life Sciences Accelerator (ALSA), operated by the Development Corporation of Abilene, Inc., is part of a major initiative to diversify the economy and redevelop the Pine Street Corridor. Community benefactors donated over $15 million to establish a branch of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - School of Pharmacy (TTUHSC-SOP) in Abilene. The TTUHSC-SOP Center for Immunotherapeutic Research was established in 2007. Joint funding from the School of Pharmacy and DevelopAbilene provides for 5 research faculty positions, in addition to staff and graduate students, lab start-up packages and major capital equipment.
The TTUHSC-SOP, the ALSA and Hendrick Medical Center, a large regional non-profit hospital, are in the Pine Street Corridor, which connects historic Downtown Abilene to Interstate Highway 20 and is the focus of City capital improvements. This redevelopment area has recently seen over $11M in private, medically-focused construction and in 2009 Hendrick Medical Center began “Project 2010,” an $80M facilities expansion.
DevelopAbilene offers qualified partners incentives for job creation from $10,000 to $35,000 over 3-5 years depending on salary levels. Also SBIR/STTR grant applications are supported through expert assistance from the TTU Small Business Development Center and matching funds for Phase 0 ($5,000/application), Phase 1 (10% up to $10,000) and Phase 2 (10% up to $100,000). Staff also supports partner applications to major statewide funding sources - the Texas Emerging Technology Fund ($200M/biennium) and the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas ($3Bn/10 years).
Biotech workforce development is on-going at all levels of education. The Abilene Independent School District operates a medical magnet high school on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University and opened a Science Technology Engineering Math High School last fall. McMurry University offers a B.S. in Biomedical Science for careers as researchers, health professionals, science educators and support personnel; and Cisco College will offer a biotechnology technician associates degree next year.
